A 60-40 blend of Petit Verdot and Cesanese d'Affile, the 2016 Franchetti shows a raw, determined character with dark fruit and prune aromas that emerge roaring from the bouquet. This is a loud, large-scale wine that wraps heavily over the palate with enduring waves of condensed black fruit, smoke, tar and cigar box. The wine is boldly extracted, almost to a fault, but it's also delightfully opulent and enriched. Saying this wine has bold character would be a gross understatement. It ages in new French barrique for eight months followed by a ten-months' resting period in cement vats. Only 3,900 bottles were made.

Grippy tannins are fleshed out by a ripe and mouthwatering mix of concentrated blackberry and boysenberry fruit, wild herb and incense notes in this rich, full-bodied red. Long and fresh on the aromatic finish. Petit Verdot and Cesanese d'Affile. Best from 2020 through 2029. 325 cases made, 75 cases imported. — AN

Tenuta di Trinoro & Passopisciaro

Tenuta di Trinoro & Passopisciaro

Found in the most remote corners of the region, where Tuscany meets Umbria and Lazio, there lies Tenuta di Trinoro. Andrea Franchetti established the estate upon this virgin wine territory of Sarteano in 1992. Today, Franchetti remains one of the most extreme winemakers in Italy, continuing to push traditional French viticulture models. He planted Bordeaux varieties at altitudes up to 500-700 meters, at super high densities, and then picks them as late as possible, even in November. He goes on to vinify every little parcel individually so he can meticulously monitor each one’s development, selecting only the best for the Tenuta di Trinoro cuvée. Clearly, the terroir is particular, given not only its lavishness but also the originality that it brings to the wines. Low-yields also enhance the wine’s structured black fruit and wild herb essences. As much as we admire Franchetti’s Tenuta di Trinoro – based on Cabernet Franc with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot – his second label, Le Cupole, offers a quality-price ratio that is too good to believe. ...
Sicily

Sicily

Volcanic in origin with an Mount Etna looming overhead, Sicily has long produced wine with a plethora of many other vegetables and fruits. For anyone who has visited this magical island, it is truly a Garden of Eden. Vineyards tend to be planted on the corners around the periphery of the island – Etna on the eastern side, which has become arguably its more qualitative area in recent years; Siracusa further south; Faro on its northeast side and numerous DOCs and IGT vineyards on its western coast, including the legendary Marsala zone. The smaller islands of Lipari and Pantelleria also produce distinctive wines. It has plantings of some international varieties such as Merlot and Chardonnay; however more indigenous varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Cerasuolo and Nerello Mascalese tend to take centre stage. Its most famous producer is generally considered Planeta; however, newer producers are rising and creating some notable, even exceptional wines. ...
