Hermitage

While Côte Rôtie might be considered the queen of the northern Rhône, Hermitage is without a doubt its king. Located around the town of Tain L’Hermitage, their vineyards are planted on terraces similar to those further north in Côte Rôtie though some are arguably less steep. There are actually much fewer producers of Hermitage compared to Côte Rôtie. This has to do with the amount of vineyard land that is designated to the appellation – 224 hectares in Côte Rôtie compared to 130 hectares in Hermitage. It has some exceptional producers including Chapoutier, Chave and Jaboulet who produce wines with power, depth and remarkable richness that are capable of lasting for many years in the cellar.
