Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Not only is Châteauneuf-du-Pape one of the most beautiful regions in France, it is also considered the core (and the most important appellation) in the Southern Rhône. It is famous for its galets or round stones that trap the sun’s warmth and continue heating up the vines, helping their grapes get ripe. While it is true that the region gets a notable amount of sun, it also receives some of the most intense bits of le mistral the infamous, powerful, cold wind that begins in the north and picks up power as it heads down the valley. The stones also add a good amount of minerality. Its most famous wine is red and most of its blends are based on Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan. However, a total of 13 different varieties can be included in its blend (not including Grenache Blanc). It also produces white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While most are blends as well, based on Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and other varieties, occasionally single varietal wines are produced such as Château de Beaucastel who produces an extraordinary Roussanne Vieilles-Vignes from their oldest parcels. In addition to Beaucastel, some other exceptional estates include Vieux Télégraphe, Henri Bonneau, Clos des Papes and Rayas. ...
