Provence

Nestled at France’s most south-eastern corner lies the area of Provence. It continues all its coast as well as inland until Marseille. Picturesque, warm and fragrant, this is the region that sings in the summer with its symphony of cicadas. While it includes a number of small top wine appellations – Bandol, Cassis, Palette and Bellet, its largest with approximately 20,000 hectares is the Côtes de Provence. While this sub-region produces white and red wines from varieties such as Rolle (Vermentino), Clairette, Tibouren, Cinsault, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre, its main wine is rosé which comprises 4/5 of its production. Due to this dominance on the wine stage, its rosé has become the world’s most known. Some of Provence’s finest rosé producers include Domaines Ott, who own three impressive estates – two in the Côtes de Provence and one in Bandol, and Domaine Miraval, an estate which was purchased by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in 2011 and is managed by the esteemed Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf du Pape. For excellent wines outside of the appellation system, one does not have to look any further than Domaine de Trevallon, renowned for their Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah red and their Marsanne/Chardonnay white from the Baux de Provence. ...
