Saint-Estèphe

The most northerly “cru” of the Médoc, St Estèphe is located due south of the northern tip of the Médoc appellation. Though it is not home to any First Growth (though some of Château Lafite’s vineyards are also found in St. Estèphe’s borders – they have a special dispensation), it has long been famous for its excellent wines. Its two most important Châteaux are Second Growths Montrose and Cos d’Estournel, but other excellent estates also call St. Estèphe home such as Calon-Ségur, Lafon-Rochet and Phélan-Ségur. Its soil is slightly different from other appellations in the Médoc in that it has more clay. While this often allows a higher percentage of Merlot, the soil also produces notably burly wines with firm tannins that are capable of ageing many years.
