Saint-Émilion

St. Emilion is one of the two main appellations on Bordeaux’s Right Bank (alongside Pomerol). It is also the name for one of the most beautiful villages in all of France that has operated as a mini capital alongside the city of Bordeaux. The soils are quite diverse, but its most famous is its creamy-coloured limestone which lies throughout the plateau and hillsides around the village of St. Emilion. It is, in fact, known for its labyrinth of limestone caves that lie below the town which were dug out to provide stone for its buildings. It is home to a plethora of top estates, including Châteaux Cheval-Blanc (which lies on the Pomerol border), Ausone, Troplong Mondot and Angélus.
