Newton Vineyard

Perched in the beautiful region of Spring Mountain, Newton Vineyard is found on the western side of Napa. Home to about 50 hectares of vineyards, their steep slopes are planted to Bordeaux varieties. The estate was established in 1977 by Peter Newton, an Englishman with a background in journalism and paper manufacturing, with his wife, Su Hua Turquon. Although, Newton Vineyard was not Peter’s first wine estate, he originally began at Sterling Vineyards in the mid-1960s before selling it in order to start Newton. The couple has spent quite a bit of money on developing the property (and even eventually added elements of their native lands such as a London phone booth, a pagoda, a Chinese red gate and lanterns). Seen from above, their vineyards are like a patch work quilt on the mountain top, quite a different view than that of Napa Valley’s floor. The 1982 vintage was their first and the wines shortly thereafter received rave reviews. They later added a Chardonnay from Carneros. A controlling interest in the estate was sold to luxury goods conglomerate LVMH in 2001, though Su Hua still remains on the board.
