85 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 % Merlot. 20/20

The 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou will eclipse the brilliant wines produced in 2005, 2003 and 2000. It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the 2009. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. Full-bodied and intense with Ducru’s inimitable elegance and purity, it should firm up in the bottle after 7-10 years of cellaring and last for 40-50 years. Magnificent! Bruno Borie has done a remarkable job at Ducru Beaucaillou.

The purity of fruit is wonderful in this, with plums, currants and hints of fresh mushrooms. Hints of cloves too. Full-bodied, with chewy, creamy tannins and a bright fresh finish. Super energy and intensity. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Better in 2018.

Features plenty of flash and sizzle, with gorgeous, inviting mocha, espresso and chocolate notes up front, backed by a dense core of plum sauce, cassis, blackberry puree and blueberry reduction accents. Long, showing terrific polish, with a lovely lingering loam note and a buried singed apple wood edge that keeps everything driving through the finish. Best from 2016 through 2035. –JM

Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Beautifully located along the Gironde estuary, the Victorian-styled Château Ducru-Beaucaillou sits high above the rest with a breathtaking view of the land and water below. Founded in the 13th century, this estate has seen only five families of successive owners. Today, the château is managed by the Jean Eugène Borie SA company, third generation Bruno-Eugène has acted as CEO since 2003. Due to its exceptional topographic origins, the large stones found across the 75-hectare vineyard provide a unique wine-growing terroir. Ducru-Beaucaillou produces quintessential Saint-Julien wines – fine, elegant, satisfying blends that linger on the palate. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé property, the grounds are planted to a mix of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and equal portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As a leading Super Second, the Grand Vin is an exemplary classically structured wine of the appellation, combining the grace and grandeur with its subtle cedar and dark fruit notes. ...
Saint-Julien

Saint-Julien

Similar to St. Estèphe, St. Julien is one of the Médoc crus that has no First Growths. However, it has some of the most respected Second-Fifth growths, including many “Super Seconds”, like Châteaux Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferré. It might be considered the most “balanced” and homogenous of the crus, often offering similar a similar flavour profile to both St. Estèphe and Pauillac but often with a bit more refinement and poise. For these traits, they are often at the top of the list for Bordeaux connoisseurs. Other excellent properties also include the lesser known and small, Château St. Pierre and both Châteaux Lagrange and Talbot, both of which produce the most classified growth wine in all of the Médoc.
