"En Primeur" is a French term for wine sold on a "futures" basis before being bottled. Every spring following the vintage, Bordeaux Cru Classé properties show cask samples of their wines and then release a certain "tranche" or set amount of their total production at a special opening price.

En Primeur usually offers the best price for a wine, which is nearly always less than its eventual release price . En Primeur works to everyone's advantage, particularly for exceptional vintages (1982, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005) when prices can increase substantially. However, the price difference is usually lower for standard vintages. The allocation of the most sought-after wines also depends on the level of support provided by négociants for every vintage.

In vintages of high demand, consumers can more easily secure the desired quantities of the wine they are interested in. Such wines may indeed be produced in limited quantities and be difficult to get hold of once bottled and released onto the market.

Bottle Formats

When buying En Primeur, the customer can decide in which format he wants his wine to be bottled. Besides the normal bottle or half bottle he can choose between large formats such as, a magnum, double-magnum or imperial. Some châteaux even propose the melchior, a hefty 18 litre-bottle.
