Bouchard Père & Fils

One of Burgundies top quality négociant/producers who owns an impressive 130 hectares of their own vineyard land (including 12 Grand Crus, 74 Premier Crus and 4 Monopoles) in addition to wine from purchased grapes. It was founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard and by 1775, Michel's son Joseph had begun acquiring their first vineyards in Volnay Caillerets. During the French Revolution when vineyards belonging to the clergy and nobility were seized, Joseph's son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, took the opportunity to extend their family's holding in Beaune, including the famous Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus. Throughout the years they continued to grow and produce first-rate wines, but during the 1970s and 1980s - two difficult decades for Burgundy - the quality of their wines declined and in 1995 the company was sold to Champagne house, Henriot, who still owns the company today. The wines are made by Philippe Prost, a driven yet reflective man who has been with the Bouchards since 1978. ...
Côte de Beaune

Côte de Beaune

The Côte de Beaune is one of Burgundy’s top viticultural regions, which is named after the town of Beaune. Found in eastern France, the Côte de Beaune is small, thin and long area that is about 5 kilometers wide and 15 kilometers long. Its size is similar to that of its northern sitting neighbor, the Côte de Nuits. These two districts make up the larger, Côte d’Or. With gently sloping hills, the vineyards benefit from ideal sun exposure, limestone-rich soils and their easy drainage. The region’s distinct zones are spilt into two parts, to the south there are the Montrachet villages that produce mainly white wines (including Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet and Meursault) and to the north there is the Corton hill which exclusively crafts reds (including Aloxe-Corton, Beaune, Volnay and Pommard). Like most regions in Burgundy, white wines are mostly made from Chardonnay and reds from Pinot Noir. However, in the Côte de Beaune white varieties like Aligoté, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are also grown. ...
