What a fabulous nose of currants, raspberries and Indian spices. Nutmeg and clover. Full-bodied, with an amazing precision and superb compacted fruit. Endless. Laser guided. Shows such intensity. Decadent and rich and changing all the time. Mystical wine. Dense, yet agile. More refined than when I tasted it in November in Hong Kong. Try in 2018.

Trinkreife: 2016-2035 warten (2022 - 2048)

Blended of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2009 Cos d'Estournel takes a little coaxing to encourage the full array of exotic spices and decadent black fruits to emerge here: crème de cassis, baked plums, blueberry compote and Black Forest cake intermingled with star anise, fenugreek, cumin seed and Sichuan pepper plus wafts of menthol, violets and smoked meats. Wow—the full-bodied palate bursts with powerful, hedonic black fruit preserves and spices, completely coating the mouth with decadent fruits that are perfectly framed by very firm yet very ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with a veritable firework display of floral, spice and red fruit notes. Just stunning.

This is a stunner, with gloriously ripe, succulent cassis, blackberry and fig fruit flavors backed by extra notes of plum cake, blueberry confiture and roasted wood spice. On the back half, the iron spine takes over on the hard-driving and extremely long, anise- and incense-tinged finish. An awesome expression of the modern style. Best from 2020 through 2040. 20,830 cases made. –JM

Château Cos d'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel

Producing some of the greatest wines in the Médoc, Château Cos d'Estournel is undoubtedly the premier estate in Saint-Estèphe. The all-encompassing 91-hectares of vineyards surround the majestic, almost oriental domaine on the hill of Cos. Founder, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel was better known as “the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” in the 1800s because of his distant conquests, with his wines reaching as far as India. He built these exotic pagodas we see today in celebration of his successes. The property currently belongs to French multi-millionaire Michel Reybier, who has upheld the founding values of excellence and has pushed forth the quality even more so since 2000. Reybier’s impressive investments in cutting-edge technologies has brought the estate to new heights. The prominent vinification techniques include must-concentration, malolactic in barrel and new oak for ageing. The Cos d’Estournel is an age-worthy robust but harmonious wine that builds in intensity and complexity with ten years’ time. The second wine was initially labeled Marbuzet, which itself is a Cru Bourgeois, but it is now bottled as Les Pagodes de Cos. In 1852, he had to sell due to his overwhelming debts. The château was then sold twice more before the Ginestet family purchased it in 1917. Their ancestors, the Prats family retained it until 2000 when they sold it to Michel Reybier, a French multi-millionaire, who has spent considerable sums to carry forth Louis Gaspard d'Estournel's original avant garde style and to push forth the quality of the wine. Today, it arguably produces the grandest wine in St. Estèphe though some would argue that neighbouring Montrose surpasses it. ...
Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe

The most northerly “cru” of the Médoc, St Estèphe is located due south of the northern tip of the Médoc appellation. Though it is not home to any First Growth (though some of Château Lafite’s vineyards are also found in St. Estèphe’s borders – they have a special dispensation), it has long been famous for its excellent wines. Its two most important Châteaux are Second Growths Montrose and Cos d’Estournel, but other excellent estates also call St. Estèphe home such as Calon-Ségur, Lafon-Rochet and Phélan-Ségur. Its soil is slightly different from other appellations in the Médoc in that it has more clay. While this often allows a higher percentage of Merlot, the soil also produces notably burly wines with firm tannins that are capable of ageing many years. In richer vintages, the addition of Merlot can add a marked difference to its alcohol and texture when compared to neighbouring Pauillac. ...
