80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.5% Alcohol The return of Concerto could not be better! Once open I loved the intense aromas of dark fruits such as cassis, plums and blackberry with a touch of spice and tobacco. Fresh, full of energy at the palate, this wine shows also structure and evolution; it is a mouthful joy to drink. Approachable now with a good decanting but I am looking forward to drink in the future. Blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon spend 18 months in small french oak barique and are produce only 14'500 bottles.

This wine was born in 1981 (as one of the first so-called super Tuscan wines), although it is never featured prominently among the other popular protagonists in the wide portfolio offered by the Mazzei family. The 2013 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a Toscana IGT blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon that is aged in French oak for 18 months. The results are beautiful and shapely with dark layers of blackberry, spice, tobacco and dried cherry. Vines are planted in limestone and sandstone soils.
The Mazzei brothers at Castello di Fonterutoli have some exciting news this year. They have released the IGT Toscana 2013 Concerto once again. This celebrated "Super Tuscan" blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon was first introduced in 1981, but production stopped in 1994. The Mazzei brothers tell me they felt renewed confidence in releasing a wine of this caliber thanks to a better understanding of their comprehensive vineyard potential and the completion of their state-of-the-art winery a few years back. The Castello di Fonterutoli property includes more than 100 different vineyard parcels in the Chianti Classico area that range from 200 to 550 meters in altitude. This enormous patrimony affords increased flexibility when it comes to fruit selection and blending potential.

A very structured young wine with firm and very silky tannins. The ripe fruit gives lovely aromas and flavors of blackberry, chocolate and spice. It's full and lightly chewy. Plenty of tannin tension. Fascinating now but better in three and four years. This was first made in 1981 and then was stopped in 1994. But the Mazzei family wanted to bring it back now. It's made in the region of Chianti Classico from the Siepi vineyard. 14500 bottles made. 80% sangivoese and 20% cabernet sauvignon. September 2016 release.

Marchesi Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli

Marchesi Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli

A long history, with close links to the wine world, the Mazzei family name can be traced to the Carmiganano region during the early 11th century. Their Tuscan estate, Castello di Fonterutoli has quite a distinguished past as well. The area was once used as a rest-stop between Florence and Siena throughout the Roman Empire. Retaining its original structure, the castle and its land have belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435. Today, after almost six centuries, Marchesi Mazzei continues in their quest for excellence, producing some Italy’s most sought-after and collectible wines. The estate boasts 650-hectares across the Chianti Classico territory. Of which 117 are planted to vines, including the Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio vineyards. Shifting away from using Castello di Fonterutoli as their brand name, the family currently identifies their Chianti Classico and Coastal Tuscan productions under the Mazzei name. The Mazzei family consistently pushes the limits, expanding its horizons reaching new heights with their dynamic viticultural and vinification approaches. The estate crafts reference-point examples of the region vintage after vintage. ...

Grapes

Sangiovese is Italy’s most planted grape (under its many clonal guises) and Tuscany’s most famous as it is the backbone to many of their greatest appellations including Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many Super Tuscans. It is thought to be of ancient origin (its name means “Blood of Jove”) and is thought to be part Tuscan, part southern Italian. Stylisically, it can range from bright ruby red to deep red, brown and tends to offer notes of sour cherries, plums and spicy leather notes paired with bright acidity and firm tannins. It produces a more rustic wine in Corsica under its clone, Nielluccio. While small quantities are produced in areas of the New World, they tend to not hit the heights of those in Italy. ...
One of the world’s most revered grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon competes with Merlot as the two most planted red varieties. Known for its noble persona, its deep colour, full-bodied structure and telltale notes of pencil lead and blackcurrant, it can be found as the main grape in Bordeaux’s main Médoc blends, but is also highly regarded in Italian Super Tuscan blends and as a 100% varietal wine in the New World’s finest areas, such as California’s Napa Valley and Australia’s McLaren Vale. ...

Tuscany

Tuscany is arguably the most famous of all Italian wine regions for not only does one have the renowned vineyards of Chianti, Montepulciano and Montalcino where Sangiovese reigns in all its forms, but it is also the land of the Super Tuscan, the cult wine style that laid the foundation of some of the greatest wines of the country. Some of the greatest bottles include Sassicaia, Tignanello, Ornellaia and Masseto. In addition to being the most famous, it is also one of the most spread out with vineyards as far north as Florence and as far southeast as the Umbrian border and as far southwest as Bolgheri and the Maremma on the Mediterranean sea. Though it is most famous for its reds, it also produces delicious whites including Vernaccia from San Gimignano and Vermentino from its vineyards closer to the sea. ...
