The 2010 Blanco (tasted from a tank sample) offers up aromas of mineral, bee’s wax, melon, and stone fruits leading to a creamy, intense impression on the palate. It has excellent balance and a lengthy finish. A tasting of several of the older vintages suggests that the wine is capable of evolving for 2-3 years and drinking well for 6-8.

Clos D'Agon

This small bodega can be found on the breathtaking Catalan Costa Brava, in the area of Calonge. Located in the far northeast corner of Spain, Clos d’Agon sits on the granite plateau of Girona, with its vineyards sitting just a few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. What began in 1999 as a virtual garage winery, Clos d’Agon was born out of a partnership between six Swiss friends, however, today, the group works entirely from a newly constructed facility. They have even hired the famed winemaker, Peter Sisseck, the genius behind Pingus, as a consultant. The bodega produces several impressive whites and reds, including Clos d’Agon Blanco and Clos d’Agon Tinto, ranking among their best – they are made from the best plots, with specifically selected grapes. The dense, intensely flavored Tinto is a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and some Syrah and a little Petit Verdot. While the Clos d’Agon Blanco is a blend of Roussanna, Viognier, and Marsanne, making the wine a creamy balanced white. ...

A prominent “white” grape from France’s Rhône Valley, Roussanne is actually pink in colour and most likely takes its name from this characteristic (roux=red). It tends to produce rich and round wines with moderate acidity and ample notes of ripe pear, beeswax and orchard fruit. It is often paired with Marsanne, and indeed these two varieties are those that are allowed to produce the white versions of Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage, and St. Joseph. Beyond the northern Rhône, it is also found in the south and used in the various blends such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, alongside other white grapes including Marsanne, Clairette and Picpoul. Château de Beaucastel values it so highly that they produce a special ‘Old Vines’ bottling with 100% Roussanne. It is also found in Savoie as well as the New World, most notably in portfolios of estates who produce other Rhône varieties. ...
A singular variety which stems from the northern Rhône and is the only variety used to produce Condrieu as well as Château Grillet, one of the smallest appellations in France (and rarely, it is comprised of just one owner). It is also the only white grape that is allowed to be blended with Syrah, a red variety, in the production of Côte Rôtie. Notably fragrant and often lowish in acidity, it offers ample aromatics of flowers, peaches and apricot. Outside of France, it is found in numerous New World countries, most notably the U.S. and Australia. ...
Marsanne is the most planted white grape variety in the northern Rhône and has taken over from Roussanne due to its easier nature to grow and vinify. Stylistically, the two are comparable, though Marsanne often has a bit more lift. For this reason, it is also used as the main or exclusive variety in St. Péray sparkling wines. It can also be found as one of the main varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, alongside other white grapes including Roussanne, Clairette and Picpoul. It works well with other varieties from theFrench Meditteranean such as Viognier and Rolle (Vermentino). Australia has some of the oldest plantings of it and it can also be found in California amongst “Rhône Ranger” producers as well as in the Valais, Switzerland, where it is used to make some excellent dry and sweet, dessert wines. ...

Catalonia

Situated on the Mediterranean coast, the Cataluña region is one of Spain’s most fascinating provinces, producing some of the most sought-after wines in the world. Stretching from the Pyrenees all the way to the border to the north with France, this northeastern region lies on the Iberian Peninsula and benefits from 580 km of Mediterranean coastline. As a diverse macro-region, Cataluña produces a wide range of wines and styles and is home to several sub-regions including: Alella, Conca de Barberà, Costers del Segre, Empordà, Montsant, Penedès, Pla de Bages, Priorat, Tarragona, and Terra Alta. There is a strong French influence for example in Penedès, which is the center of Spanish sparkling wine - Cava DO, but also in Empordà, where late-harvest wines are made similar to those found in the French Roussillon region. Just to the west of Penedès lies Tarragona, which has two superior sub-regions, Montsant DO and the high-quality Priorat DOCa region. Priorat and Rioja are actually the only two regions in the country that are awarded with DOCa status. In general, Cataluña wines tend to be full-bodied and high in alcohol, due to the grape varieties and the region’s warm weather conditions. ...
