There's lovely precision to the integration of this elegant rosé, offering a fine backbone of acidity and a light mousse. The flavors of poached pear, black cherry, fleur de sel, lemon zest and ginger are finely meshed, with a subtle vein of smoky minerality. Drink now through 2023. 2,250 cases imported. –AN

Maison Ruinart

The oldest Champagne house in the region, Ruinart has exclusively produced Champagne since its establishment in 1729 by Nicolas Ruinart. By 1769, they were the first maison to ship bottles in wooden cases, which otherwise was an impossible feat – as Champagne cannot be shipped in barrels as still wines could. Among the big wineries in Reims, Ruinart has maintained to keep quite a low profile in recent years, despite being owned by the luxury goods corporation, LVMH. With a relatively great production, the quality remains excellent, producing prestigious cuvées, like Blanc de Blancs Dom Ruinart and Dom Ruinart Vintage Rosé. The vintage cuvées are particularly refined and powerful due to some extended ageing of the base wines, however, the Brut R de Ruinart NV is one of the best of its kind. ...


There is no drink quite as festive as Champagne. Sparkling wine was first produced within its three main towns – Reims, its largest and home to the Montagne de Reims, famed for its Pinot Noir; Epernay, the capital of the Côte des Blancs, the area most renowned for its Chardonnay; and Ay, the town situated on the border of both the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Less expensive Champagnes are often produced in the more southern area of Côte de Sézanne and the Côte des Bar. The industrialisation of Champagne was developed by the widow (veuve) Clicquot in the 19th century. But it was carried through by other Houses, such as Bollinger, Krug and Moët & Chandon. While large Houses still dominate Champagne’s wine scene, in recent years there have been a plethora of smaller producers, known as “grower Champagnes” that have popped up. Instead of selling their grapes to negociants, they produce their own sparkling wines – a system that reflects other regions such as Burgundy.
