What a great wine! This is the perfect pairing for any summertime seafood or sushi dinner – actually, it is even outstanding on its own for a chilled aperitif.  Pale yellow in color, this wine reflects brilliant specs of green. There is a refreshing bouquet of citrus peel - lemons and limes – on the nose.  As we can see here, Aligoté is a grape variety that has a lively acidity and great dry mineral aromas. These unique characteristics, along with this wine’s provenance of Côte de Beaune (where all the top white Burgundies are made) makes for a wonderful fresh and crisp white – there are even some exotic notes of finger lime on the palate. In my opinion, Aligoté may be a bit underestimated, however Leroy is without any doubt is one of the best producers in Burgundy. In fact, today the 2009 still feels bright and young, it has an extraordinary aging potential.

Domaine Leroy

As it became increasingly difficult to find wines that met the high standards of the Maison Leroy label, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy decided to purchase her own vineyards. Piecing together several estates, she established Domaine Leroy in 1988. Today, the vineyards stretch over 21-hectares across mostly Grand Cru and Premier Cru classified zones. Following Lalou Bize-Leroy’s deep-rooted belief that everything is alive – from the soil to the grapes to humanity – she immediately introduced biodynamic farming out of respect for the terroir. This formerly controversial cultivation practice, is now a widely-known holistic approach that focuses on the interconnectedness of our environment – taking into account astrological and cosmic influences as well. Without the use of any chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, or pesticides the vineyards are tended to year round – everything is hand done. The results of this quality-conscious producer are astounding. The wines are extremely concentrated yet refined, with a rare purity that stems from the property’s intuitive vineyards. ...

Grapes

Known mostly within the confines of Burgundy, Aligoté is Burgundy’s « other » white grape, preceded by Chardonnay and followed by a smattering of Pinot Gris. Aromatically, it is similar to Chardonnay with its notes of citrus and orchard fruits. However, its acidity is more striking. When grown at low yields it is capable of producing wines of good complexity, though it will virtually never hit the heights of Chardonnay. At higher yields or in cooler vintages, its acidity usually dominates. For this reason, it often accompanies Crème de Cassis, another Burgundian production, to create Kir. ...

Burgundy

There is no region in the world that is viewed as the “Mecca” of wine like Burgundy is. Unlike Bordeaux or the Rhône which is a blend of varieties, both red and white Burgundies are almost always pure varietal wines – Pinot Noir for the reds and Chardonnay and occasionally Aligoté for the whites. The region lies due southwest of Champagne and is divided into several sub-regions. Chablis is the furthest north and produces some of the greatest whites from both its premier cru and grand cru sites. Citrus fruit, gun flint and oyster shell are just some of the notes it offers. Further south lies the Côte d’Or or the “Golden Slope”. This is the pinnacle of all Burgundian wine as it is the home to its capital town of Beaune, as well as to its greatest wines and villages – Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vosne Romanée, Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet. Further south in the Côte Challonaise and the Maconnais, one can find some of Burgundy’s best priced wines, including appellations such as Mercurey and Givry for the reds, as well as Montagny, Bouzeron Aligoté, St. Véran, Macon and Pouilly Fuissé for the whites. ...
