Bordeaux EP 2019

En Primeur 2019: an extraordinary vintage, in difficult times.

For passionate wine enthusiasts, March/April has always meant travelling to Bordeaux for their En Primeur tastings. Understandably however, Covid-19 has cancelled the many châteaux invitations, barrel tastings, meetings, discussions and even a number of critic’s ratings.
However, the châteaux did not want the extraordinary quality of their wines to go unnoticed. So, many of the producers took the initiative to send samples and to spend time meeting "virtually" with their faithful customers, such as ourselves, to explain the exemplary 2019 vintage. For the first time in our history, we had the honor of participating in En Primeur tastings right here in Melano and to rate the wines ourselves, assisted by Robin Kick, a former employee and today a renowned Master of Wine.
The 2019 En Primeur Campaign will be one to go down in history. But world events will not be the only narrator to tell its stories during this challenging and sensitive time. The 2019 vintage has proven to be one of the region’s most qualitative yet dramatic in the last decade. It was a year of heat, cold, drought and rain that periodically visited the region over a series of months. A warm February led to early budbreak, only to be drastically slowed by spring frosts in April and May. Smouldering summer temperatures from the end of June to early August caused hydric stress in some areas but was followed by a temperate August and September and some light precipitation to reinvigorate the vineyards. This calmer weather coaxed the vines into a bountiful, healthy harvest with small berries that are concentrated in sugar, tannin and acidity. The resulting wines tend to show the finest traits of classic vintages like 2016, 2010 and 2001 with notable delineation and freshness but many are also ample with fruit and velvet akin to 2018, 2015 and 2009. Many will be approachable early on but with the capability of cellaring beautifully for years to come.
– Robin Kick, Master of Wine
