92.3
So perfumed with black cherry, strawberry and flowers. Tar undertones. Brick, too. Some minerals. Stone fruit. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Barbaresco with clarity and finesse. This has some wine from the top crus of Gaja such as Sori Tildin and Sori San Lorenzo in the blend because they were not bottled. Drink or hold.
James Suckling
New oak adds vanilla and toast to the expressive cherry and berry fruit in this dense red, presenting a layer of tannins that will require time to integrate. Much better with air, staying fresh, focused and long. Best from 2018 through 2028. 2,500 cases made.
Wine Spectator
The 2012 Barbaresco shows different DNA from its previous incarnations. Angelo Gaja usually blends fruit from 14 vineyard sites to make this wine. Starting with this vintage, he has opted to reduce that number to eight vineyards instead. The change is subtle, but you can taste it. At this young stage in the wine's life I was unsure of the results. This Barbaresco is more austere, thorny and nervous compared to the super supple and rich vintages of the immediate past. The nose shows dark fruit follow by cola, garden herb and white pepper. The mouthfeel is silky and firm and edgy.

Gaja

Barbaresco would not be the same without Gaja’s iconic reputation. This venerable domaine not only drew worldwide attention to the region, but they have also shown the quality that is attainable not just with Nebbiolo, but with “outside” varieties as well. Their story started over 150 years ago, when Giovanni Gaja founded the winery in 1859 to complement the food in his restaurant. Today, the company is managed by the fourth and fifth generations, Angelo Gaja and his children. Over the years, the Gaja name has grown to represent not only exceptional quality, but unique and intriguing flavors that are unlike any others from the region. The single-vineyards are a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, like all the wine produced before the introduction of the DOCG denomination. This denomination was established in 1966, and it is mandatory for the wines to be 100% Nebbiolo. For this reason, he declassified most of his single-vineyard wines and took the denomination of Langhe Nebbiolo DOC instead, in order to reach the specific style he desired. Gaja currently produces a total of twelve different Piemontese wines, as well as, seven Tuscan wines from Montalcino and Bolgheri. ...

Grapes

The King of the Piedmont grapes, Nebbiolo makes some of the greatest reds in the world under the denominations of Barolo and Barbaresco. Thin-skinned, it produces wines that are light in colour but that pack a punch in terms of structure. Also high in acidity, they are renowned for their longevity and for many generations, they were aged for years in oak casks to tame their power. Today, ageing time has shortened in order to retain a greater amount of fruit. In addition to the area around Alba, it is found in other areas of northern Italy, such as Gattinara, where it is called Spanna. Like Sangiovese, there are some New World plantings but as of yet, their wines do not dazzle like those of Italy. ...

Piedmont

Piedmont

One of the greatest wine regions in the world in terms of wine quality (and its renowned cuisine and white truffles), Piedmont is also home to Slow Food, further indicating how essential both good wine and food are to this northern region. Most vineyards are planted on hillside terraces that rise and descend numerous villages. Its most important grape in terms of quality is Nebbiolo, the moderately thin-skinned variety that is capable of producing lighter coloured, but powerful and spellbinding Barolos and Barbarescos that beautifully accompany much of its unique cuisine. However, numerous other grapes such as Barbera and Dolcetto are also noteworthy. Whites can also be unique and delicious and include floral and peachy Arneis, Chablis-like Gave and the off-dry, semi-sparkling Moscato d’Asti.
