This red shows density and structure, with firm, well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity supporting plum, currant, dark chocolate and mineral flavors. Polished and harmonious. Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2026. 30,000 cases made. –TM

I tasted the 2014 Selección Especial, a very different vintage from 2013. It was a prolific vintage, so they had to do a severe green harvest to adjust yields, and some rains in September forced the harvest to be a little earlier. The final blend is slightly different each year and in 2014 it was 70% Tempranillo, 17% Syrah and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. The aging in barrel was slightly shorter, 11 months instead of 13. 2014 was a homogeneous vintage and they didn't need to use any Merlot, which in slightly warmer vintages does not work as nicely as in cooler ones. This wine changed from the 2010 vintage, as before that year they used quite a lot of oak and the wine was very oaky. They have now removed the excess, and the wines show more precision and purity. It's a little riper and concentrated than the 2013, with more clout but perhaps a little more predictability. This has all the ingredients to be a great commercial success. 390,000 bottles, 22,000 magnums and 1,800 double magnums produced and bottled in 23 lots.

Abadía Retuerta

Abadía Retuerta

Duero Valley’s rising star, Abadía Retuerta is one of the world’s greatest red-wine producers. Situated in the village of Sardón de Duero, this impressive estate spans over 700-hectares, with 200 of those planted to vines. While the winery was commercially established in 1996, apart from the contemporary cellar, the stunning Romanesque monastery dates back to the 12th century. Lying just outside of the Ribera del Duero DO appellation, the estate now belongs to the Swiss pharmaceutical company, Novartis - that has simultaneously revived the ancient priory to its former beauty, and forged an indisputable reputation as Spain’s most critically acclaimed red producer. Famous French enologist, Pascal Delbeck and his successor, Ángel Anocíbar demonstrate Abadía Retuerta’s detail-oriented and quality driven values in their modernly styled classic wines. The wines are made from a meticulous selection of the best fruit, resulting in deeply colored, intense and noticeably structured reds. The labels range from the lighter Selección Especial, to the potent and layered top cuvées, like the premium Abadía Retuerta Petit Verdot, and the pure Tempranillo, Pago Negralada. ...
Castilla y León

Castilla y León

Castilla y León produces an impressive variety of wines including those from some of the most famed Denominaciones de Origen. Among these lies the renowned Ribera del Duero, which crafts fine reds of Tempranillo (also known as Tinta del País, Tinto de Toro and Tinto Fino); but also Rueda which is better known for their whites made from Viura, Sauvignon and Verdejo; while Toro produces strong, powerful reds along the Portuguese border. Located on the northern half of the central Iberian Plateau which sits between 700 - 1000 meters, this region stretches from the north coast all the way down to Madrid, and to the west, Castilla y León borders Portugal. Here the varied landscapes and climatic conditions make this possibly the most eclectic wine region in all of Spain. Spotted with far-reaching valleys, great flat plains and steep mountain chains, Castilla y León is home to several unique micro-climates that produce a wide array of wines that cater to all tastes. There are the exuberant reds of Toro and the refined whites of Rueda, but also the Cava of Arando de Duero and the world class reds of Ribera del Duero – making Castilla y León a leader in Spain’s quality wines. ...
