The new Jewel for the Rothschild Family (Mouton)

Dear Wine Lover,

I have something very special for you today! Last week during Art Basel we presented a new white wine which was a hit among our clients – this wine actually is a new project led by the Rothschild Family (Mouton Rothschild). The Rothschilds are visionaries, not only do they own one of the greatest estates in the world - Château Mouton Rothschild - but their overall professional drive and vision has led them to invest in new projects which include underestimated wine producing areas. For example, the family invested in an estate in Napa Valley (USA) in the late 70s, which is now known as Opus One - one of the greatest and most sought after wines of the region. Then again, in the late 90s, the family invested in Almaviva (Chile) which is now one of the greatest and most sought after wines of Chile. Can you see the pattern here? The family’s third and latest project is actually in their home country, in a region that is one of the most undervalued, yet highest potential in all of France - the Languedoc Roussillon – located in the south west of France, in the commune of Saint-Polycarpe, near Limoux.

This beautiful property dates back to 1650s, when the estate was known as Domaine de Lambert. It belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Polycarpe. In 1998 Mr. Chéreau, a lawyer from Marseilles and heir of the estate, sold it to Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her two sons. The three entrusted the management of the Domaine to the family company, Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. The estate was very run down, calling for extensive renovation of the vineyard and the winemaking facilities, a process that took five years. In 2003, Domaine de Baronarques benefited from a fortunate conjunction of circumstances: the wine proved to be of very high quality and the Domaine was awarded the AOC Limoux rouge appellation. Domaine de Baronarques could finally take its rightful place alongside the family's other estates, including the illustrious Château Mouton Rothschild.

The fantastic 2009 vintage was Baronarques Blanc’s first ever vintage. This wine is 100% Chardonnay, and reminds me of the traditional white wines from Burgundy. Since then, each vintage has been highly appreciated and offered great drinking pleasure. The 2015, as for most of the French wine regions, has been pretty exceptional. April was wet but May was dry, with average temperatures 1 °C higher than normal. The Chardonnay parcels were harvested in early September, ten days earlier than in an average year. The 2015 Vintage was a great vintage that is offering everything a white wine should have and served blind it can be mistaken for a very good white burgundy.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rewarded this beautiful Chardonnay with 93 points out of 100, describing it as “one of the finest whites coming from the Languedoc”.

You’ve probably never tried this before, but we think its time to change that!

Working closely with the Domaine during Art Basel, we are very pleased to make this very special offer. This wine is now available for an incredible price, which will only be valid till the end of this month (30.06.2018) or before we sell out of our allocation.

Davide Vaccarini 18 + points: Baronarques Blanc is the most elegant Chardonnay that I’ve ever tried from Limoux. I love the balance it has. From its ripe fruit character, displaying mainly notes of pear and bergamot fruits, to the freshness which pleasantly flaunts mineral and verbena notes. The excellent combination of new and old oak aging, brings structure and a buttery feeling on the palate. The oak is so well integrated, that this can be everyone’s go to glass of wine. The Rothschild family really brought well-deserved attention to the south west of France, with a consistent quality from year to year. In a blind tasting of Burgundy wines, Baronarques can fool many great tasters. Drink now or old few years for a real treat!

Robert Parker 93 points: Showing much better from bottle than barrel and one of the finest whites coming from the Languedoc is the 2015 Limoux Grand Vin Blanc from Domaine de Baron’arques. Made from 100% Chardonnay that was raised all in barrels, it offers terrific notes of crisp peach, pineapple, citrus blossom and a hint of brioche in a medium-bodied, vibrantly pure, balanced package. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years.
