Angelo Gaja: The producer who dragged Piedmont into the mode

Dear Wine Lover,

Angelo Gaja does not need any introduction as he is the producer who mostly revolutionized Italian winemaking, known as the producer who dragged Piedmont into the modern world! Since 1961, his passion, dedication and labor-intensive work have made Gaja one of the most highly acclaimed and sought after Italian wines.

While his flagship wines are Sori Tildin, Costa Russi and Sori San Lorenzo, which are produced in very limited quantities, he also produces other single vineyard wines of incredible quality! Among these, his incredible Barbaresco 2014, a pure Nebbiolo beauty. Gaia Gaja, Angelo daughter, described this 2014 vintage as the best ever produced in its history. This has been confirmed by both Antonio Galloni and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, that awarded the 2014 vintage with the highest scores ever for this wine, respectively 96 and 94 points, with Galloni stating ”This is one of the most tightly wound, intense versions of Gaja's Barbaresco I can remember tasting. Don't miss it” and Robert Parker describing it as “2014 was one of the best vintages ever in Barbaresco”. Not only, but we can also propose you the Sperss 2011, rated with a brilliant 95 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate stating: “the 2011 Langhe Sperss is a wine of profound beauty”.

We were lucky enough to secure a very tiny parcel, which we are pleased to share with you today at very interesting conditions. This is a chance not to be missed:

For 36 bottle or more CHF 135.00 (CHF 145.40 Vat incl.)

Some magnum (150cl.) available at CHF 300.00 (CHF 323.10 Vat incl.)

Antonio Galloni 96 Points: Gaja's 2014 Barbaresco is rich, super-dense, and inviting, with serious underpinnings of structure and the same classicism that made the 2013 so compelling. Dense and powerful in the glass, with explosive energy and tons of tannin, the 2014 is built for extended cellaring. Expressive floral and savory notes hover out of the glass in this super-expressive Barbaresco. This is one of the most tightly wound, intense versions of Gaja's Barbaresco I can remember tasting. Don't miss it.

Robert Parker 94 Points: Gaia Gaja tells me 2014 was one of the best vintages ever in Barbaresco, if not the best for her vineyards. She cites the prolonged growing season that continued at a slow rate during the cooler summer months only to speed up thanks to a heat spell at the very end, right before harvest. Nebbiolo loves slow maturity and a prolonged growth cycle: The 2014 vintage did indeed get off to an exceptionally slow start. The 2014 Barbaresco is not austere or astringent. Instead, it offers plump ripeness with rich fruit flavors backed by spice, licorice and tobacco. The wine offers good structure from the point of view of its tannins, yet there is no harshness or bitterness whatsoever. Drinking window 2018-2030

75.0 cl Sperss - Gaja - 2011 CHF 145.00 (CHF 156.15 Vat Incl.)

For 36 bottle or more CHF 135.00 (CHF 145.40 Vat incl.)

Robert Parker 95 Points: With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2011 Langhe Sperss is a wine of profound beauty. This is a velvety and caressing expression with dark fruit layers followed by kirsch, cassis, leather, balsam herb and white truffle. The Gaja family decided to move their bottling date forward in order to preserve the integrity and freshness of fruit in this warm vintage. This move has helped to avoid overripe sensations. In fact, Langhe Sperss seems fresh and tonic. This bodes exceptionally well for its aging potential. My meeting with Angelo and Gaia Gaja revealed a few surprises including a fascinating look at the 1996 Langhe Gaia & Rey Chardonnay tasted from magnum. Gaja's long-time winemaker, Guido Rivella retired last year. He had consulted with the Gaja family since 1970 and today Alessandro Albarello has taken over as winemaker. One subtle change in approach concerns the DOCG Barbaresco. In the past, the wine represented a blend of fruit from 14 vineyards. With the 2012 edition, that number has been taken down to eight instead in an effort to better underline the wine's territorial identity. Gaia Gaja describes this break from tradition as "a very difficult decision" to make.
