Dear Wine Lover,
There is just one Australian producer which can be easily compared in terms of quality with the most renown Penfolds, but in terms of price it is still far cheaper in respect to Australias n°1: We speak about Torbreck and its fantastic Run Rig! Besides being an incredible wine in every vintage this is probably the rarest Australian wine with only between 600 and 1500 cases produced. For you information Penfolds produces between 6000 and 7000 cases! We managed to find some perfect cases of the 2005 vintage, which Robert Parker defined as it will be a candidate for perfection down the road., rewarding it with a nearly perfect score of 98+ points.
Torbrecks flagship wine, the Run Rig, is made from 40- to 120-year-old Shiraz vines with some co-fermented Viognier (usually around 3%). Torbreck is one of the new-style cult 'boutique' wineries in the Barossa. It was founded by Dave Powell in 1994, with the first wines made in 1995. Powell's philosophy has been to secure grapes from small parcels of the very best old-vine Barossa vineyards, and then to make hand-crafted wines in a traditional style that reflect their Barossa origins. Yields are invariably low, and the resulting wines are deeply impressive.
Here is the great occasion to secure some cases of this ready to drink top Shiraz blend!
75.0 cl Run Rig - Torbreck Vintners - 2005 CHF 255.00 (CHF 274.65 Vat incl.)
Robert Parker 98+ points: Torbrecks flagship is the 2005 Run Rig, a 97% Shiraz cuvee sourced from 120- to 160-year-old vines with 3% finished Viognier added before bottling. It spent 30 months in 60% new French oak. Opaque purple/black in color, it has a kinky, exotic bouquet of fresh road tar, smoke, lavender, black pepper, game, blueberry, and black raspberry. Full-bodied and opulent on the palate, the wine is dense, packed, and unevolved. It will continue to open up over the next 10-12 years and drink well through 2040 in the style of a Chapoutier Hermitage. If it develops as I think it will, it will be a candidate for perfection down the road.
