The new superstar from Tuscany...

Dear Wine Lover,

I would like to introduce you something that is becoming a real superstar and I ‘d like to introduce it to you next to an italian legend which is Tignanello. The wines are very similar but in my personal opinion much better and even cheaper: Concerto from Marchesi Mazzei.

Both wines are based in Tuscany, but more precisely from the Chianti area, both wines are family owned proprieties and both are Lords “Marchese”, both wines have more or less the same grape varieties: Sangiovese blend with a smaller part of Cabernet Sauvignon. So what’s the difference? One, Tignanello, is a big brand, widely distributed, the other, Concerto, is a much smaller production, a nice and connoisseur wine, where the power of the brand has not yet affected its price. We have tasted both wines blind, and to us, there is no competition in terms of quality, Concerto is another planet.

The interesting thing about this wine is that it was produced until 1994, and then the Mazzei Family decided to use the vineyard to produce their top wine SIEPI until 2011, when they decided to start producing it again and to bring Concerto back to its ancient glory! It was one of the forerunners and also a major player of the "Super Tuscans" phenomenon. CONCERTO 2015 is a harmonious blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon; the grapes are being chosen from the best parcels of 6 hectares from the entire estate and only around 2`400 cases have been produced, making this a rarity even harder to find than Masseto (3000cases). Concentration and complexity make it a wine with an authentic and unique temperament. Its exceptional position, the unique microclimate and the considerable difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures yield grapes of exceptional quality. We also tasted a Concerto from the 80s and the wine was still great and fresh, so there is also great potential for aging.

We made a comparison between Concerto 2015 and the latest available vintage of Tignanello, the 2014:

James Suckling 96 Points: This is fabulous with blackberry, blueberry and currant aromas. Some slate. Full body, dense and smooth with firm and silky tannins and intense fruit. This is a classic sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon blend. Don't miss it. Needs three or four years to completely come together.

Davide Vaccarini 19.5 Points “This is amazing, such a great and intense nose of Cassis, plums, Blackberry, blueberry , Tobacco and spices. So complex, Almost no need to taste it. Full body, silky tannins and a juicy finish. I love the tension and texture . It is magic. If you love italian wines, this doesnt need to miss in your cellar”
