Sassicaia 2014: The new vintage

Dear Wine Lover,

I am pleased to inform you that the brand new vintage of Iconic Italian Star Tenuta San Guido have been announced, the 2014 Sassicaia.

Sassicaia, one of the most sought after wines from Italy worldwide, has produced another fantastic vintage as you can see from the only available tasting notes. Our purchasing manager Andrea Rancan and our our Brand Ambassador Davide Vaccarini had the chance to taste the new vintage, and despite the initial doubts on the quality they can both confirm that this is another great effort also in this vintage. It is slightly less opulent than usual, but it shows a nice elegance and structure which is usual to San Guidos wines. Further it is already pleasant to drink, even more enjoyable at the moment than the 2013 vintage.

This is the perfect moment to buy one of the most legendary wines in Italy before prices get back to normal levels!

Robert Parker 92-94 points: Tasted from barrel, the 2014 Bolgheri Sassicaia is shaping up very nicely since I tasted it last year. In fact, it has made reassuring gains in terms of color density, aromatic definition and specifically textural richness. This wine will be released in 2017, but is scheduled to be bottled in November of this year (instead of January 2017) in order to allow it more time to flesh out and integrate in glass. The bouquet shows slightly rustic tones of tilled earth and spice that come on the heels of blackberry and dried cherry. The 2014 vintage is characterized by a late growing cycle. The last day of harvest was October 31. Despite the vintage challenges, primary fermentation and malolactic fermentation were executed without a hitch.

James Suckling 92-94 points: Extremely aromatic with black currant, strawberry and cherry. Some rosemary. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a gorgeous finish. Bright acidity. It came from all the hillside vineyards. This shows lovely potential and balance. Delicate and fine. Much better than anticipated considering the cool and wet growing season in Tuscany.

Decanter 93 points: Relatively pale and limpid, this has a hauntingly beautiful aromatic quality of lilies, violet, cassis and cherry, which in sum is utterly beguiling. In the mouth it is demure and delicious with bright succulent acidity and an almost Burgundian sweetness and structure, replete with filigree tannins. Here the fruit is youthful raspberries and red berries with a hint of savoury graphite and violet. In comparison to other, more broad shouldered, Sassicaia vintages such as the 2012, this is altogether more delicate and lacy, yet still retains great length and precision. This is not a Sassicaia for the ultra-long haul and is so precociously good and drinkable now that it will take some resistance not to pull the cork sooner rather than later. That said, it would easily repay another decade in bottle.

Further I also thought to propose you Sassicaias little brother, Guidalberto 2014. This has just been rated with very good 92 points by Wine Spectator and it’s the perfect wine for daily drinking:

75.0 cl Guidalberto (2nd Vin) - Tenuta San Guido - 2014 CHF 27.00 (CHF 29.16 Vat. Incl.)

For 12 bottles CHF 24.00 (CHF 25.90 Vat Incl.)

For 36 bottles CHF 23.00 (CHF 24.85 Vat Incl.)

For 120 bottles CHF 22.00 (CHF 23.75 Vat Incl.)

Magnum at (150.0cl) a CHF 65.00 (CHF 70.20 Vat Incl.)

Imperial at (600.0cl) a CHF 350.00 (CHF 378.00 Vat Incl.)

Wine Spectator 92 Points: A lean, tightly wound red, offering black cherry, black currant, wild herb and mineral aromas and flavors. Harmonious and concentrated, with a long, fresh finish that echoes fruit and mineral details. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2017 through 2024. 28,000 cases made.
