Dear Wine Lover,
Grattamacco is one of those wonderful anomalies of the fine wine world. They fly under the radar of most (not yours fortunately) playing second fiddle to the famous super Tuscans. Founded in 1977, they are the second oldest estate in Tuscanys Bolgheri, after Tenuta San Guido of Sassicaia fame, and are turning out some rather wonderful wines of great character and drinkability to boot.
As you may know their 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyard are situated on top of a hill, facing the sea, between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri - 100m above sea level. This unusually high altitude, for Bolgheri at least, and its inland location means that this part of the region is windier and less humid. Ordinarily Sangiovese cannot grow in Bolgheri due to it being very sensitive to humid conditions, however, in Grattamaccos micro climate, it thrives. This is therefore one of the rare wines from the Tuscan coast to have any Sangiovese in it, to the tune of 10%, adding verve to the 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot.
The 2015 Grattamacco is again a mind-blowing vintage and definitely worthwhile to buy, stock and drink ! At half or 1/3 of the price of Ornellaia, Sassicaia and other Bolgheri wines this is offering a tremendous value.
From my informations average price in Switzerland on this wine is around CHF 70.00 + Vat per bottle, so this seems a really good deal at following prices.
75.0 cl Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore - Podere Grattamacco - 2015
CHF 55.00 (CHF 59.25 Vat Incl.)
12 bottles or more CHF 53.00 (CHF 57.10 Vat Incl.)
36 bottles or more CHF 50.00 (CHF 53.85 Vat Incl.)
Wine Spectator 95 Points: Complex cherry, currant, mineral, spice and tobacco aromas signal this serious version. Despite the ripe fruit flavors and sweet tones, this has grip and the potential for development. Hangs together nicely now, in a youthful phase. Shows terrific length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2022 through 2038. 4,000 cases made. BS
James Suckling 95 Points: What a lovely nose that marries fresh elements of graphite, lead pencil, crushed violets and stones and riper notes of blackberry pie and blueberry cake. Full body, very polished tannins, an unmistakable serving of acidity and a long, mineral finish. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and sangiovese. Made from organically grown grapes. ICEA certified. Drink in 2022.
