Catena Zapata: "A giant" - JS 96 points

Dear Wine Lover,

Maybe we can convince you making your first new world wine purchase with the best wine from Argentina? Catena Zapata 2015!

Founded in 1902, Argentina’s Bodega Catena Zapata is known for its pioneering role in resurrecting Malbec and in discovering extreme high altitude terroirs in the Andean foothills of Mendoza. The inaugural 1997 vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend set a new standard of quality for wines from South America when it won a series of blind tastings held in the USA and Europe where it was compared blind to top cuvées just as Latour, Haut Brion, Solaia, Caymus and Opus One. The Nicolás Catena Zapata 1997 came in either first or second in every tasting… Nicolas Catena Zapata has been named by Laura Zapata, Nicolas’ daughter, in honor of his father which create this Argentina’s jewel.

Zapata is produced from a plant-by-plant selection of historic rows in the Catena Zapata vineyards. The wine is made from over 200 separate microvinifications representing different rows, altitudes, and harvest times. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months and is only produced in outstanding vintage years. In this 2015 vintage the blend of 83% cabernet sauvignon and 17% Malbec has truly convinced James Suckling that rewarded this new vintage with the exceptional score of 98 points defining it “A giant” and “full of energy and enormous refinement”.

Robert Parker 93 Points: "Along with the 2014 vintage, I also tasted the 2015 Nicolás Catena Zapata. The 2015 is higher in Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents 83% of the final blend, while Malbec comprises the remaining 17%. It feels quite ripe, with notes of cherries and an earthy touch. It's juicy and soft, very approachable, even though it has the Cabernet's textbook tannins. 72,000 bottles produced. "

James Suckling 96 Points: "A giant. Not only in Argentina’s strong suit in terms of power, it also shows finesse and aromatic complexity. There are all manner of blackberries, smoke, chocolate and spicy notes. Built on a panoramic scale, but full of energy and enormous refinement. The finish cascades on and on. A blend of 83% cabernet sauvignon and 17% malbec. Try in 2021. "
